If you’re searching for unique wedding venues Chicago edition, you’re probably not planning a ballroom-with-chair-covers kind of day and you’re probably sick of looking through traditional wedding site directories with a ton of listings that you hate. Chicago is layered with history, art, and midwest emo and a ton of grit, and it’s where I was born and raised. While I’m out west now, I keep a base here in the city that built me and come back often for work, and created this guide to share a comprehensive list of my all-time favorite venues and spots in the city for your wedding weekend.
So here’s a curated list of genuinely distinctive Chicago wedding venues, places with character, mood, architecture that I personally adore (and I know you will, too), and when you’re ready, I’d love to talk your ear off about all my favorite vintage film cameras, and which ones I’d love to use at your wedding.

Personally, I think planning a more intimate wedding can be even harder than for a large group. Most suppliers are already catered towards bigger weddings, and it can make it difficult to find the folks that actually service the day you personally want to have. So I’ve separated out this guide based on smaller events and larger events, so that you can find exactly what you need for your event. Pro tip, the best intimate wedding venues generally offer an atmosphere that fosters intimacy (lighting, smaller rooms and cozier spaces, etc).
This is the kind of thing that you can’t create with decor, so it’s important that your venue sets the mood you’re looking for. Restaurants can sometimes be the best option here, so I’d reach out to any of your own personal favorites (this can be a fun way to share a favorite place with your group and make things more personal), but keep in mind that folks often require both a rental fee for a private space and a food and beverage minimum, so sometimes it can even be more cost effective to rent a smaller space and cater in.
Whether you want a cozy rooftop dinner, a candlelit courtyard ceremony, or a design-forward loft, these small venues prove that a wedding with fewer guests can feel even more intentional. Here are some standout Chicago wedding venues perfect for celebrations under 50 guests:

When couples search for unique wedding venues Chicago, what they’re often really looking for is a city that matches their energy. And the city offers so much, from lake front views, to unique artsy spaces, to the best food in the world (might be biased again, but I miss my food back home so badly), and a ton of tourist gems.
For your wedding, this offers guests ample hotels and lodging options, tons to do, and a full weekend of activities you can plan to make this truly a memorable event all the way through.
While your wedding venue will set the stage, your wedding location in itself matters. This is why you’re searching for a unique wedding venue in Chicago, and threw out the suburbs options.
One of Chicago’s strengths is its personality shifts block by block, and you have a ton of choices to fit the vibe of what you’re looking for. I’d suggest doing some research on the surrounding neighborhoods before choosing your venue, since it could offer adjacent walkable activities or the room blocks for your guests.
There’s a reason this is a tourist destination in itself, and you should make good use of it! If Chicago is home, or you live in the suburbs, it’s even more reason to highlight some of the gems of the city, as we really don’t fully appreciate them every day. Here’s what makes Chicago especially guest-friendly, and some activities for your wedding website to offer to your favorite people:
The Chicago Architecture Center river cruise is one of the best ways to understand the city (it’s one of my personal favorites!!!). It’s equal parts educational and visually stunning, and a perfect Friday activity before or after rehearsal dinner.
Chicago’s lakefront is wildly underrated. Guests can:
I know I said this above, but we truly do have some of the best museums in the world, plus a ton of tourist options. I suggest offering guests a meet up spot either the morning before your rehearsal, or the day before as they come into town. It’s a nice way to serve a casual welcome event before the formals start for the weekend, and a fun opportunity for extra memories made. Here’s a few of my favorite things to suggest:
Like I said, I miss the food so much. I’d bring in some good options for your wedding, obviously. Beyond this, mention some of your favorite places so they make the effort to get out there and enjoy some of these menus!
